SUMMARY:Using Location Analysis to Inform Community Suicide Prevention Strategies
DESCRIPTION:Understanding the locations where suicide deaths and attempts occur is an important component of a comprehensive suicide prevention approach. In this webinar\, Dr. Kimberly Repp\, Chief Epidemiologist for Washington County\, Oregon\, will review innovative data-driven prevention efforts that were implemented in her county using a novel suicide surveillance system and suicide fatality review process. Dr. Repp will describe how this novel analysis led to different mitigation and prevention strategies\, including outreach and training for hotel staff where suicides had occurred. The Department of Health will also provide a brief overview of location-specific data analysis and trends in Vermont. Attendees are encouraged to bring questions for discussion. \nABOUT THE PRESENTER: \nDr. Kimberly Repp is the Chief Epidemiologist for Washington County\, Oregon\, where she leads the county’s epidemiologic response and oversees the Medical Examiner’s office. With a PhD in Microbiology and an MPH in Epidemiology and Biostatistics\, her work includes an innovative suicide surveillance system that has been nationally recognized. Dr. Repp continues to advance public health practice through evidence-based interventions grounded in field investigation. \nThis webinar is supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention through the Vermont Department of Health. \n

SUMMARY:Crisis Support for Autistic People (virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Suicide is a leading cause of premature death for autistic people. Yet\, many professionals lack autism-specific knowledge and experience\, potentially leading to miscommunications and misunderstandings with autistic individuals. Additionally\, the suicide prevention resources and supports designed for the general public can unintentionally harm autistic people because autistic people think\, communicate\, and experience the world differently than non-autistic people. \n\n\n\nPresenters: Rae Hartman Haight\, Autism Studies Researcher; Brenna Maddox\, PhD / Psychologist; Lisa Morgan\, LSCW-cc / M.Ed. / Consultant \nThis strengths-based training aims to close that gap and improve crisis supports for autistic people. Training attendees will learn how to effectively communicate with and support an autistic person in crisis. The training will highlight recent research findings\, powerful stories of lived experience\, case scenarios\, and autism-specific resources developed in collaboration with autistic adults. \nHosted by CHL\nFunder Info: This training is supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention through the Vermont Department of Health.

Including resources to get help\, Umatter® Suicide Prevention Awareness and Skills Training provides the fundamental knowledge to build a suicide prevention-aware community or workplace. \nEffective January 1\, 2025\, the registration fee has increased to $25 in order for us to continue providing you with the high-quality trainings you expect from CHL. If you have difficulty paying the fee\, please contact us for scholarship consideration. \nThis training is designed and presented by Center for Health and Learning (CHL) under funding from the VT Department of Mental Health to the VT Suicide Prevention Center\, a public-private partnership between VT DMH and CHL. \nAbout this Training: \nParticipants learn basic knowledge and skills of suicide prevention including societal myths and attitudes\, use of sensitive language\, risk factors and warning signs\, protective factors\, considerations for populations at risk\, examples of what to say and do\, and local and national resources for help. Participants learn a three-step process for talking with someone who presents with risk for suicide. (she/her) Suicide Prevention and Umatter® Program Specialist \nCristina joined CHL in October 2023 with 20 years experience in the fields of mental health and education. Cristina’s experience includes working at two designated agencies in Vermont\, an Executive Director position at an early education and childcare program\, and working in mental health non-profit organizations in Massachusetts. Cristina aims to create connections and rapport to promote change\, reduce stigma associated with mental health\, and advocate for youth and families within their home\, school\, and community settings. Her experience as a clinician in various settings provides a foundation for understanding the strengths and challenges of the systems of care and how to support those navigating through it. \nCristina loves living in the Green Mountains with her husband and three children…and a hound dog named Chewy. Reading good books\, spending time at the lake with family\, and weekends spent cheering on the sidelines of youth sports are a few of Cristina’s current joys. \nWho should attend: Anyone interested in preventing suicide. General and inclusive across organizations\, demographics\, and communities. \nObjectives of Training: \n● Know basic information about suicide prevention \n● Identify protective factors\, risk factors\, and warning signs \n● Learn the 3-step intervention process and practice it \n● Increase confidence and competence to respond \n● Understand your role in suicide prevention either in your school\, organization\, or community
