SUMMARY:Crisis Support for Autistic People (virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Suicide is a leading cause of premature death for autistic people. Yet\, many professionals lack autism-specific knowledge and experience\, potentially leading to miscommunications and misunderstandings with autistic individuals. Additionally\, the suicide prevention resources and supports designed for the general public can unintentionally harm autistic people because autistic people think\, communicate\, and experience the world differently than non-autistic people. \n\n\n\nPresenters: Rae Hartman Haight\, Autism Studies Researcher; Brenna Maddox\, PhD / Psychologist; Lisa Morgan\, LSCW-cc / M.Ed. / Consultant \nThis strengths-based training aims to close that gap and improve crisis supports for autistic people. Training attendees will learn how to effectively communicate with and support an autistic person in crisis. The training will highlight recent research findings\, powerful stories of lived experience\, case scenarios\, and autism-specific resources developed in collaboration with autistic adults. \nHosted by CHL\nFunder Info: This training is supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention through the Vermont Department of Health.

SUMMARY:Youth Mental Health First Aid
DESCRIPTION:  \nSunshine Silver Lining invites you to sign up for a *virtual* Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) course in the winter of 2025. These trainings are open to Vermonters and those that serve and support Vermonters and there are 30 spots in each class\, grant-funded by Vermont Care Partners. \nBefore the events in the winter\, beginning in Mid-January and Mid- February depending on the course you have signed up for\, information will be shared to complete 1-2 hours of pre-work before the live Zoom session. The live Zoom session will include videos\, group work\, and engagement activities and requires active participation. Upon completing the program\, all participants will receive a three-year certification in MHFA. \nThe purpose of MHFA training is to build an empowered community united around mental health care by educating communities\, organizations and individuals in how to address mental health issues effectively. In MHFA classes\, people get a better understanding of how to recognize and offer initial aid to someone who may be experiencing a mental health challenge or oncoming crisis. \nAttendees explore how to ask if a person is distressed and how to intervene on their behalf. MHFA courses also spell out a clear\, five-step action plan to help individuals connect with helpful professionals and peers. The course also covers community resources available\, as access to care is a crucial piece of the puzzle. \nYouth Mental Health First Aid focuses on Adults helping youth ages 6 to 18 and Adult Mental Health First Aid focuses on Adults helping other Adults. There is also a teen program which is available after a school or youth serving organization invests time in taking yMHFA.

SUMMARY:Suicide Awareness for the Agricultural Community
DESCRIPTION:Despite farmers’ foundational role in the food system\, agriculture consistently ranks among occupations with very high suicide rates. Farming can be isolating\, physically and mentally demanding\, and full of potentially devastating uncertainty. We will focus on why this population is especially vulnerable and offer some statistics and examples. \nWho Should Attend? \nAll Professionals and individuals interested in learning more about how to support the Farming community. \nObjectives: \n\nIdentify protective factors\, risk factors\, and warning signs of suicide in the agricultural community\nUnderstand unique challenges and vulnerabilities among the farming population\nList available resources and have access to printed material\nDescribe an effective strategy to talk with someone who is at risk of suicide\nKnow where to find more information and support\n\nRegister today.
