Facing Stigma in Vermont
It can be hard to talk about suicide.
Whether you have lost someone to suicide or you yourself are having thoughts of suicide, the negative beliefs, norms and myths about suicide can make it hard to ask for help or talk to someone that you may be worried about. The best way we can help ourselves and others is to acknowledge the stigma that exists and start talking about suicide. The more we educate ourselves about suicide and listen to each other, the more we can get past the stigma that exists and help each other.
Here are some simple things we can do to face stigma, help ourselves, and help others:
- See how other Vermonters are talking about suicide
- Tell your own story about how you have been affected by suicide
- Learn about common suicide myths
- Participate in an Out of Darkness Suicide Awareness Walk
- Learn about the common warning signs and how to offer help
- Attend or sponsor suicide awareness training for your community
