Ethical Reporting on Suicide Saves Lives

November 19 @ 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm

Reporting attracts people who want to make a difference, but with a topic as nuanced as suicide, how we communicate truly matters. Research shows that responsible, ethical reporting can reduce risk, encourage help-seeking, and save lives.

Join the Vermont Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention for a presentation and discussion led by David O’Leary, a longtime AFSP leader and Boston broadcaster of nearly 40 years. He brings both professional expertise and personal passion to helping shape safe, thoughtful conversations about mental health.

In this virtual session, you’ll gain practical guidance on reporting with care, using safe language, avoiding harmful details, and centering hope, recovery, and prevention. Together, we can ensure our words support those who may be struggling and help strengthen our communities.

Suggested Audience: Vermont communications and media professionals, content creators, spokespeople, information officers, and press liaisons for government agencies.
